Cultivars: one of the most important components of cannabis, but rarely spoken on in correct terms. Although the terms cultivar and strain are alike, they are completely different.

A cultivar is described as a plant that is cultivated to have different characteristics. For example, think about varieties of apples. Honeycrisp apples don’t just grow naturally, they were created with a cultivar. “Cultivar” is short for “cultivated variety”,  meaning a plant that’s been selected and improved upon by humans. A strain, on the other hand, refers to a subtype in a microorganism. Think of it as a strain for certain illnesses. The biggest difference between these two terms? Cultivars relate to plants, strains do not.

Creating cultivars from a seed isn’t all that simple. Breeders and growers need to go through a multi-step process to ensure there is stable offspring.
