• Type: Indica-dominant hybrid. Leafly calls it indica-dominant; SeedFinder lists it as indica/sativa and "rumored to be slightly indica dominant"; a seed seller, Premium Cultivars, puts it at 60% indica; AllBud's listing says 70/30.

• Mendo Breath — Gage Green Genetics, bred from OGKB (OG Kush Breath, a Girl Scout Cookies selection) × Mendo Montage. It brings caramel-vanilla sweetness, purple tones in some phenos, and a lot of the sedation. The F2 used here is Mendo Breath F1 crossed back to itself, per SeedFinder.

Put together, Garlic Breath carries Cookies genetics on both sides — which goes some way to explaining the dense, resin-heavy buds and the faint sweet, creamy note under all the funk.

The other Garlic Breath: Hogsbreath × Chemdog D BX2

Weedmaps puts it bluntly: Garlic Breath is "one funky name attached to at least two different family trees." The second one, which AllBud lists and Weedmaps traces to Tennessee, is Hogsbreath × Chemdog D BX2. AllBud's page for that version reads 16–18% THC and 70/30 indica, with herbal, pine, spicy and woody flavors. Weedmaps says its breeder history is unclear and that the ThugPug GMO × Mendo Breath cross is the one most people mean today. If a menu lists Garlic Breath at 17% THC, there's a good chance it's this other line.

Diesel Hemp's Garlic Breath™ — same name, our own cross

There's a third one, and it's ours. According to our product page, "Garlic Breath™ is a Diesel Hemp™ proprietary cultivar developed in-house, and is only sold by Diesel Hemp™." Its listed lineage is GMO Garlic Cookies × Chocolate Cream × Abacus Diesel™, our own OG Kush × Purple Urkle cultivar. So it shares the GMO parent and the garlic-and-onion nose with ThugPug's Garlic Breath, but it's a different cross — Chocolate Cream adds depth and sweetness, and Abacus Diesel™ adds the gas on the finish. • Garlic Breath 2.0: AllBud lists it as GMO × Mendobreath F2 — the same recipe — at 25–27% THC and 70/30 indica, with garlic, spicy tobacco and mint notes. Think of it as a newer selection, not a different family.
• Platinum Garlic Breath: a name we found only on dispensary menus (Resonant Cultivation). We couldn't verify its lineage, and it shouldn't be confused with In House Genetics' Platinum Garlic.
• Offspring: SeedFinder counts 39 direct descendants, including Black Garlic, Dragons Garlic Breath, Bat Breath, Baked Calamari, Caribbean Vampire and Altoidz; Leafly also lists Wicked Lime and Stanky Leg.

Garlic Breath Strain Terpene Profile

The terpene profile is what you'd expect from a garlic-named strain — savory, spicy and gassy, with a citrus-pine edge. Leafly lists limonene as the dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and pinene. Other strain guides add myrcene, humulene and ocimene, without lab data. Caryophyllene is the one with real research interest: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors. Together they shape the entourage effect behind the high — but, as you'll see below, terpenes probably aren't what makes it smell like garlic.

• Limonene: bright citrus that cuts through the garlic — the "lemon on the exhale" several growers describe, and part of the happy lift up front.
• Caryophyllene: peppery, spicy warmth — the cracked-black-pepper bite that Leafly and Weedmaps reviewers both pick up, and a likely contributor to the body-calming feel.

This is the headline. Garlic Breath smells like exactly what it's named after: fresh garlic, onion and savory funk over a gassy diesel backbone, with herbal and peppery notes underneath. Leafly's flavor tags are pepper, pungent and blue cheese; Weedmaps reviewers vote pungent (42%), pepper (31%) and earthy (27%). GreenState caught "a crisp, sweet, vanilla-like note" in the jar before grinding — after that, it's mostly garlic. A Theory Wellness listing adds hints of vanilla and caramel, which fits the Mendo Breath side.

On the inhale you get savory garlic dankness; the exhale brings pepper, fresh herbs and a faint citrus-pine lift. One grower described it as "buttery garlic" with sweet floral and peppery diesel notes, while GreenState put the flavor somewhere between dry juniper and earthy patchouli. Does it really make your breath smell like garlic? GreenState's reviewer answered that: it'll make your breath smell like cannabis smoke, "not garlic bread." For years the answer was "terpenes," and the old version of this page leaned on caryophyllene. That's only part of it. Caryophyllene gives the pepper, but the garlic, onion and skunk funk is better explained by sulfur. a 2021 ACS Omega study from Abstrax identified a family of volatile sulfur compounds in cannabis — including 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol — behind the skunky smell. Those compounds are chemically similar to the sulfur compounds that make garlic smell like garlic, and they register at tiny concentrations.

No lab has published a sulfur-compound breakdown for Garlic Breath specifically, and GreenState's reviewer thought the garlic note likely isn't from sulfur at all — so treat this as the best current explanation, not a settled fact. What's not in doubt: the funk comes down from GMO and its Chem D side.

ThugPug Genetics is a low-key breeder known online as ThugPug. According to a GrowWithJane write-up, the brand started around 2016, and rumor has it the breeder once tested genetics for Gage Green Group — the people behind Mendo Breath. That would explain why so much of the ThugPug catalog runs through Mendo Breath and OGKB: Peanut Butter Breath, Meat Breath and Pug Breath are all "Breath" crosses, and GreenState files Garlic Breath in the same family.

Garlic Breath itself came out as a limited-edition seed drop around 2016. SeedFinder says it was never released as feminized seed and ThugPug hasn't re-released it, so most Garlic Breath today comes from clones or from other breeders' versions, such as Premium Cultivars'. Is Garlic Breath THCA Flower Legal?
