The lineage puzzle: what Sensi never published

Here's the honest version: Sensi Seeds has never released the exact pedigree. SeedFinder says so outright, then lists two theories. The one most databases repeat is Haze crossed with a Northern Lights #5 × Shiva Skunk hybrid. The second, which SeedFinder attributes to High Times, swaps in Skunk #1 — making it Skunk #1 × Northern Lights #5 × Haze, with SeedFinder's best guess being Northern Lights #5 × Haze C and Skunk #1 × Haze C.

Either way, the building blocks are the same three pillars of 1980s Dutch breeding: Haze for the soaring, clear-headed lift and the incense-pine nose; Northern Lights #5 for resin, structure and a shorter flowering time; and Skunk for vigor and yield. Why two bags of Jack can feel different: the phenotypes

Jack Herer is famous for not growing true. Leafly says there are four phenotypes — three that lean sativa and one more indica-like. Sensi Seeds' own listing describes most plants as tall, sativa-structured and resin-heavy, with a rarer compact, indica-dominant pheno that finishes in about eight weeks. SeedFinder describes the same spread, from long, slow sativa plants to short, fast indica ones. HigherLeaf claims two of each. The upshot for you: the Jack Herer you buy depends on which pheno the grower kept, and it's one reason the effects and potency numbers swing so much between sources.

Jack Herer is one of the textbook terpinolene strains. Leafly lists terpinolene as dominant, followed by caryophyllene and pinene, and Vivosun's guide gives the same top three. That corrects a common mistake — including on the earlier version of this page — that calls myrcene the lead. Strain guides also add limonene, myrcene, ocimene and humulene, but without lab numbers behind them. Of the group, caryophyllene has the firmest research: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

• Terpinolene: The signature. Fresh, piney, slightly citrusy and floral — the note Pax describes as the source of Jack's "energetic, stimulating" reputation. Terpinolene-dominant strains are uncommon, which is why Jack Herer smells different from most of a modern menu.
• Caryophyllene: The pepper and wood under the pine — the "spicy flowers" AllBud mentions.
• Pinene: The sharp pine-needle edge, and a likely contributor to the clear-headed feel people describe.
• Limonene: The lemon and orange that Pax and AllBud taste on the inhale.
• Myrcene, ocimene and humulene: Earthy, sweet-herbal and woody supporting notes listed by strain guides. Plausible, not proven.

Put together, that's a pine-cleaner-and-lemon nose rather than candy or gas — closer to Durban Poison and Ghost Train Haze than to anything in the dessert aisle.

Appearance

AllBud describes "oversized pepper-shaped bright neon green nugs with golden undertones," thick orange hairs and a frosty coat of golden-amber trichomes. HeyAbby says long, curved, bright neon-green buds with golden-yellow tones; Pax calls them medium green and elongated. Those long, spear-shaped colas are the Haze side showing; the heavy frost is the Northern Lights side. Indica-leaning phenos run denser and rounder.

Aroma and Flavor

Open a jar and the first word that comes to mind is often clean. AllBud compares the smell to Pine-Sol, with a lemony pine overtone and spicy flowers; Verilife says it's like "a common cleaning liquid," with herbs and flowers — and notably not skunky, despite the Skunk in its background. Leafly's flavor tags are pine, woody and earthy.

On the inhale, Pax tastes tangy lemon or orange; on the exhale, pine, sage and wood. AllBud adds sour and sweet citrus with a woody pine finish, and a peppery tail is common. Sensi Seeds' own listing notes that dried buds can carry a sharp, savoury hashish tone with Afghan and fruity-skunk notes depending on pheno. Not everyone's a fan — one Leafly reviewer calls the smell "an absolute abomination" — but for most people it's the definition of a classic sativa nose.

The strain is named after one of the most important figures in the legalization movement. Per his Wikipedia biography, Jack Herer was born in Buffalo, New York, on June 18, 1939, and died in Eugene, Oregon, on April 15, 2010, at 70, from complications of a heart attack the previous year.

So the real number is probably higher than nine, depending on how you count placings and seed-versus-flower categories. The medical history is just as notable: Leafly says Dutch pharmacies distributed Jack Herer as a medical-grade strain, and Sensi says it's one of the few strains officially recognised for medicinal use in the Netherlands, with Jack Herer Regular in the Dutch official cannabis programme.
