The OG Kush strain is the most consequential plant in American cannabis. A Florida clone that reached Los Angeles in 1996, it smells like lemon, pine and raw fuel over damp earth — and it became the genetic backbone of the West Coast. GSC, Headband, Skywalker OG, Tahoe OG, Fire OG, Wedding Cake and Do-Si-Dos all trace back to it, which means a huge share of today's menu does too. OG Kush Genetics & Lineage

• Type: Hybrid. Leafly files it as a hybrid with mostly calming effects; AllBud says 55% sativa / 45% indica; Pax calls it 50/50; grow guides list 70/30 or even 75/25 indica. In practice it plays balanced up front and finishes heavy.
• Ancestry: Most often given as Chemdawg × Hindu Kush (Leafly's family tree). Weedmaps lists Chemdog × Lemon Thai, one grow guide says Chemdawg × "Old World Paki Kush," and Leafly's own description calls it a supposed cross of a Northern California strain with Chemdawg, Lemon Thai and a Hindu Kush plant from Amsterdam.
• Breeder: Unknown. AllBud says the breeder is undisclosed; the plant was grown out and spread by Matt "Bubba" Berger and Josh Del Rosso ("Josh D").

The origin story: Florida to Los Angeles, 1996

The version told by the people involved goes like this. Matt Berger — later the "Bubba" in Bubba Kush — kept insisting to his L.A. roommate Josh Del Rosso that Florida had the best weed. Del Rosso didn't buy it. According to a 2020 LA Weekly history, Berger went back to visit friends in Florida and returned with a zip-top bag of about 15 cuttings: five became Bubba Kush, five became what is now OG Kush, and the rest became a strain called KY. Only one Kush cutting survived the trip. Leafly calls that survivor the original clone-only OG Kush of Southern California.

Benzinga's account adds that Berger first grew the Kush in Florida around 1992 from a bag a friend gave him, and that the name came from a friend who said the frosty colas looked like "kushberries." In 1996 Berger and Del Rosso planted Kush, Bubba and Purple Indica in a crawl space under their rental house. Demand exploded — Benzinga reports $8,000 a pound in the late '90s. B-Real of Cypress Hill has said the strain came out of Florida under the name "Crip" or "Creep," and JointCommerce relays a version where the Florida plant was called "Krippy," out of Gainesville. Snoop Dogg and Cypress Hill put the name in rap lyrics, and OG Kush went national.

What is OG Kush a cross of? Treat the pedigree as folklore

No breeding record documents "Chemdawg × Hindu Kush." Most likely, OG Kush was a selected Florida phenotype with Chem-family genetics, kept alive as a clone. The Chemdawg link is the part most sources agree on — Leafly reports High Times' Danny Danko theorized that Chemdog is a parent of both OG Kush and Sour Diesel, which would explain why the two share that sour fuel. The Kush side brings the density, earthiness and heavy finish you also find in Afghan Kush, Hindu Kush and Master Kush. The specific "× Hindu Kush" cross, though, is a story reverse-engineered from the smell.

What DNA testing says

Phylos Bioscience, which genotyped many OG samples, went further. As relayed by JointCommerce, Phylos' 2018 "United States of OG" write-up called a Hindu Kush link "unlikely" and found relatively low genetic variation among OG cuts — consistent with one clone spreading across California. Weedmaps, citing Phylos too, describes moderate variation. Either way, it supports the clone story over the cross story.

Clone-only OG vs OG Kush seeds

The original L.A. OG circulated only as a cutting. Seed versions are breeders' recreations: Humboldt Seed Company, for example, sells an OG Kush feminized line it describes as F6 BX3 and 70/30 indica. Seeds can be great plants, but they aren't the Josh D clone — which is one reason two jars labeled "OG Kush" can smell and hit so differently.

OG Kush Terpene Profile

OG Kush is a myrcene-led strain. Leafly lists myrcene as dominant, followed by limonene and caryophyllene. Cannigma goes further and publishes averages from lab-tested products sold as OG Kush: myrcene 0.69%, limonene 0.41%, humulene 0.15% and pinene 0.1%. Name labels aren't standardized, so a given jar can vary — but that stack is what produces the lemon-pine-sap-and-fuel nose over a damp forest floor. Caryophyllene has the most research interest: a 2008 PNAS study found beta-caryophyllene binds CB2 receptors directly, and Ethan Russo's review of terpene–cannabinoid synergy is the go-to paper on the "entourage effect."

• Myrcene: the dominant terpene. Earthy and musky, and the one most associated with OG's heavy back half — the reason it ends the night.
• Limonene: the lemon on top, and likely part of the fast, euphoric onset. Humboldt Seed Co credits it to the Lemon Thai side of the story.
• Caryophyllene: black pepper and warm, gassy spice — the only common terpene shown to bind CB2 receptors directly.
• Humulene and pinene: wood and pine sap. Pinene keeps the head a little clearer early on.

The fuel itself isn't any single terpene on the chart — it's the Chem side of the family showing through, which is why no terpene bar fully captures what "gas" smells like. Expect the profile to vary by cut and batch.

Appearance

OG Kush doesn't look like a modern dessert strain. Expect medium-to-large, spear- or triangle-shaped buds that are airier than dense Cookies-family flower, often with stem visible. AllBud describes forest-green nugs with long, thin orange hairs, golden undertones and a coat of golden-white trichomes; Weedmaps notes oily, shiny trichomes and sugar leaves streaked with lavender and pink; Pax describes pale green, triangular buds with purple-streaked leaves. Cold-finished phenotypes can show more purple. It's sticky when you break it apart.

One tell: rock-hard, perfectly round, deep-purple flower is probably not OG. Real OG is lumpier and greener.

Aroma and Flavor

Crack the jar and fuel hits first — a solvent-like smell closer to gasoline than candy. Underneath sits sharp lemon, a Pine-Sol brightness, wet earth and a peppery back end. Leafly lists the flavors as woody, pine and earthy; AllBud's tasters call it "classic sour citrusy" with woody pine and a spicy, kushy overtone, and tag the aroma citrus, dank, earthy, pungent, skunky and sour.

Smoked, it's lemon and pine on the inhale, earth and pepper on the exhale, and fuel that lingers in the room. The smoke is harsh and can make you cough — longtime OG smokers consider that part of the signature. A vaporizer at lower temperatures keeps the lemon and cuts the bite.

OG Kush is strong for a classic, but modern menus have caught up. The published numbers:

What Does "OG" Actually Stand For?

Three main explanations circulate, plus a few stragglers:

• "Original." The answer from the people who were there. Josh Del Rosso told LA Weekly the "OG" was added to separate their cut from knockoffs — "the original Kush from Florida that came from our group of guys." Humboldt Seed Co and Benzinga report the same: OG means original.
• "Ocean Grown." Cannigma traces this to an anecdote in the book Cannabis Pharmacy: a Sunset Beach grower in 1993, told his kush must be "mountain grown," replied that it was ocean grown. Fans also connect it to the strain's coastal Florida roots.
• "Original Gangster." The street meaning of OG, popularized by Ice-T's 1991 album. Benzinga notes it may have inspired the name, but there's no way to confirm it.
• Stragglers: "Original Grower," "OverGrown.com" and "Old Grandad" also circulate — none with a source behind it.

Bottom line: "original" is the best-supported answer. Ocean Grown and Original Gangster are good stories, not documented history.

"OG Kush" is the least reliable name on a cannabis menu. So many plants were sold under it that the label alone tells you little. Judge the flower instead:

• The nose: lemon-pine over fuel and damp earth. Sweet candy or pure skunk isn't OG.
• The structure: airy, spear- or triangle-shaped buds, lime-to-forest green with orange hairs. Dense, round, deep-purple nugs are likely something else.
• The terpene report: myrcene on top with strong limonene and caryophyllene is the OG experience, whatever the jar says.
• The high: a quick head lift that lands in a heavy body. A strain that stays racy for hours probably isn't OG.

OG Kush is famous for being finicky, which is part of why the real thing is scarce — many products sold as OG are easier substitutes.

Is OG Kush THCA Flower Legal?
